Beverly passed away on Thursday, March 14, 2024. She was born on August 25, 1946, to LaVerne and Doris Shafer of Cleghorn, Iowa. She graduated from Meriden-Cleghorn High School having been involved in drama, choir, and sports activities. Bev was also involved in 4-H projects, as well as in youth activities at Oakdale Evangelical Free Church.
Bev attended Trinity College in Deerfield, IL and received her BA in Elementary Education in 1968. Beverly’s passion for teaching brought her to Marquardt School District 15 in the fall of 1968 where she creatively taught thousands of students over her 36-year career. She continued her professional educational career at Governors State University, where she earned a Master of Arts in Education; with a specialization in elementary education, on August 1, 1980.
Additionally, Beverly attended National Louis University from 1983-1992 in order to obtain a Certificate of Advanced Studies in Reading. Armed with this wealth of knowledge and outstanding talent, she was absolutely dedicated to the success of her students. Beverly made learning fun using puppetry, paints, and plays, among other artistic mediums. In retirement, Beverly’s infinite love of teaching took her to Waukegan Public Schools where she worked as a substitute teacher reaching more students and making friendships with new colleagues. Above all, she was a champion advocate for children, parents and teachers. Her kind words, her caring smile and her encouragement will be missed by family and friends.
Beverly married Frank Skarulis on November 11, 1978. She is survived by her husband of 45 years, Frank, and their son, David. She is also survived by her brothers Larry (Sue) of Plymouth, MN and Karl of Cathedral City, CA and her sister, Joleen Anderson, of Storm Lake, IA.
She is survived, too, by several nieces and nephews and grand nieces and nephews. Bev is so loved by all her family, being actively involved in their lives even though miles apart. She was a wife, mother, sister, auntie, and great-auntie who brought much joy to their lives...with her caring heart, fun-loving spirit, and generosity.
Bev was preceded in death by her parents and her brother-in-law, Gordon Anderson.
