Visitation for Ethel Baumann will be held at the Ahlgrim Family Funeral Home, 201 N. Northwest Hwy, Palatine, on Tuesday, December 20, 2016 from 10:00 am until the time of the Funeral Service at 11:00 am, followed by the Interment at Randhill Memorial Park. A Celebration of Life will be announced later.
Ethel passed away Thursday evening, December 8th, at the Lutheran Home in Arlington Heights, Illinois less than a month before her 100th birthday. She was born January 7, 1917 in Palatine, Illinois.
She attended Kitty Korner School, a rural school at the corner of
Rand and Dundee Roads in Palatine and in 1926 Ethel joined the Kitty Korner School Achievement Club where she learned to sew. From 1928-1930 she was a school and area editor at Kitty Korner School and sent editorials to the “Our Rural Schools” section of the Cook County Herald newspaper. She graduated from Palatine High School in 1933 and their class motto was “The elevator to success is not running, take the stairs”.
Being raised on a farm Ethel helped with chores, did canning, made jams and jellies and helped with the cooking. She took care of her parents and brother in later years and was an avid gardener. She also helped at holiday time at the Chidley turkey farm when they were busy processing orders for turkeys.
Ethel was very active at St. Paul United Church of Christ in Palatine. She was baptized, confirmed and attended Sunday School as a youth and then went on to teach Sunday School and was the secretary, sang in the choir and was a member and treasurer of the Women’s Guild for many years. She was very active with Spring Luncheons and bake sales and also helped with the church newsletter, the Scribe.
Ethel was preceded in death by her parents, William and Louise (Devermann) Baumann, her brother Elmer and sister Edith Baumann Fremd. She is survived by her niece, Marie Fremd, nephew Robert Fremd and great nephews Robert Fremd, Jr. and spouse Shannon and Abigail and Garrett, Eric Fremd and spouse Ivy and Tommy and Andrew.
Ethel loved her family, served God and her church and was a friend to all. She will be dearly missed.
