Marjorie A. Smith

d. November 17, 2016

Funeral Services for Marjorie Ann (McNamara) Smith will be held at a later date.

She died November 17, 2016 at her home in Arlington Heights and was born March 28, 1921 in Winterset, Iowa to Eugene and Annabel McNamara.

Marge graduated from Winterset High School and Cottey College.

She married George W. Smith on May 7, 1944.  They lived in the same house in Palatine their entire married life.  George passed away in 1995.  The couple had two children, a son George Smith, Jr (Beth) of  Keswick, VA, and a daughter Ann (Jack) of Des Moines, IA.  She leaves two grandsons, Chris (Andrea) of Des Moines, IA and Patrick (Cathy) also of Des Moines.  Also surviving are 2 great grandchildren, George Williams and Evan Williams.  She will also be missed by her many nieces and nephews.

Marge taught school in Palatine for her entire teaching career, mostly as a 3rd grade teacher, but the last few years as a reading specialist.  Her fellow teachers and many students remained her lifelong friends.  They were a continuing support group until her death.  She enjoyed seeing them and hearing from them often.

She was a member of the United Methodist Church in Palatine.  She was also an active member and past president of PEO in Palatine.  Reading was her passion- she continued to read and do crossword puzzles to her final day.

Mostly, Marge was a loving mother and wife.  She passed on her love of reading and learning to her children and her students.  She loved her children and her large extended Smith family.  Holidays found her in the kitchen on Brockway street, cooking for gatherings of the large Smith clan.  She will be missed by all.

In lieu of flowers, a donation to the Palatine Public library District, Finance Manager 700 N. North Court, Palatine, IL 60067 would be appreciated.
