Mae was born on May 19, 1935, to Charles and Lillian (Czapiewski) Conroy. She passed away on Wednesday, February 14, 2024, at Alexian Brothers Hospice, Elk Grove Village, IL.
Mae was one of 6 children; survived by sisters, Ellen Gorski and Bridget Niemiec. She is also survived by her five children, Timothy (Paulette), Laurene Gatlin (Jerry), Glenn (Joan), Jennifer Read and Mark (Susan); 11 grandchildren, Ashley, Hillary, Matthew, Cassidy, Jack, Jacob, Olivia, Noah, Kristofer, Kathryn and Alex; 8 great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
Mae was preceded in death by her husband, George Goergen, whom she married on April 16, 1955, her sisters, Geraldine Patience and Joan Kwasniewski, and her brother, Charles Conroy.
Mae was a graduate of Kelvyn Park High School (1953) in Chicago and was a proud member of their rifle team, obtaining marksman status. She started working as a secretary at Hanover Highlands Elementary School after all her kids were of school age and worked her way into the administration offices of Schaumburg School District 54 where she headed up the newly formed word processing department until she retired. Shortly after retirement, Mae moved to Henderson, Nevada where she became an active member of the Red Hat Society, enjoying outings and trips to different sites including the famous Bunny Ranch. Shortly before her 80th birthday, she moved back to the Chicago area so she could spend more time with family. Mae’s proudest accomplishment was the success of her five children who all graduated college and all obtained master’s degrees or higher.
