Michael J. (Mick) McCabe of Barrington, IL passed away unexpectedly at his home on September 18, 2014. He is survived by his wife, Cori Marquette McCabe, his son, Brian Michael McCabe of Chicago, IL, his daughter, Shannon Marquette McCabe Carpenter and his son-in-law Jeremy Joseph Carpenter of Elmhurst, IL.
Mick was born on June 19, 1945 in Denver, CO to Mr. and Mrs. Joseph and Mary McCabe. He was preceded in death by his brother, Joseph (2007), sisters, Margaret (2012) and Sara (Sally) (1997). He was a 1967 graduate of the University of Northern Colorado, and a 1971 graduate of the Columbus School of Law at Catholic University.
Mick worked in Washington, D.C. as an economist for the Civil Aeronautics Board. He joined the Washington office of Allstate Insurance Company in 1971.
In 1974, he was promoted to the Allstate Home Office in Northbrook, IL. As befitting of his many talents, he served in a variety of roles in planning, claims, marketing and legal. At the time of his retirement in 2007, Mick was the Senior Vice President and General Counsel for Allstate.
With the passing last Thursday of Michael J. McCabe, the insurance industry and world lost one of its most influential, intelligent and capable advocates. He was a critical participant in the insurance industry’s effort to have “air bags” required as a life-saving component in every car sold in the United States. He co-authored the NAIC report on investment income that has to this day ensured that insurance companies can earn a fair rate of return.
In leading the Allstate Claims department, he transformed the claim-handling process making it fairer and more efficient. His reorganization of this vital part of an insurance company was subsequently adopted by virtually every Property and Casualty Insurer in the United States. When the methodology used by insurance companies to price and underwrite their products came under attack, “Mick’s” training as an economist and lawyer proved invaluable in the public debate and in the final resolution of an issue so fundamental to the Industry. His skill set was as broad as his knowledge base was deep and when combined with his organizational ability, speaking talents, witty writing and contagious humor, “Mick” was a truly unique and loved individual.
His work life only mirrored his dedication and success in his personal life. Mick was and will forever be a son, a brother, a husband, a father and a friend that anyone could only hope to emulate. His success in all aspects of life is and will forever be uncomparable.
A forever coach, husband, and father both on and off the field, he taught of skills, of hard work, of perseverance and of confidence.
Mick was a man that made God pleased. He was a kind soul whose desire for life will light the world for generations to come.
