Susan Osterman

Susan Osterman, born May 24, 1961, age 62, passed away peacefully in Barrington, Illinois, on October 17, 2023.

Susan was the daughter of Thomas and Mary Jo (nee Shullo) Osterman of Kildeer. Susan was a gifted student and writer. She earned her undergraduate degree in Sociology and Art History from Hillsdale College and a Master’s degree in Social Work from Loyola University, all with high honors. She worked in the advertising field at Bentley, Barnes, and Lynn for some years before changing careers to focus on counseling disadvantaged children in the Chicago Public Schools. She enjoyed being an avid Cubs fan, as well as photography, music, concerts, art, food, and traveling. Susan had a genuine interest in people, always seeing the good. Despite suffering from depression most of her adult life, she shared her kind heart and brought joy to many, from homeless people in her Lincoln Park neighborhood to clerks in the stores she frequented. She would learn the back story of the driver of any taxi she hired. There was never judgment, only curiosity and kindness.

Susan is survived by her parents, her sister Beth (Jim) Kimberly, her brother Michael (Charlotte) Osterman, her niece Caroline Kimberly (fiancé Matthew Talley) nephews Nicholas Kimberly (Partner Ruth Roudiez) and Oliver Osterman. 

The family would like to thank the caring staff of Prairieview at The Garlands of Barrington and Suncrest Hospice for their loving care.

Visitation will be at 10:00 am on Saturday, November 4th, 2023 at St. Francis de Sales Church, 33 S. Buesching Rd., Lake Zurich, Illinois, followed by funeral Mass at 11:00 am.
