A Memorial Visitation for Walter T. Hartwell, age 84, a resident of Plainfield, IL, formerly Palm City, FL, as well as St. Charles, IL, will be held on Saturday, April 2, 2016 at the Ahlgrim Family Funeral Home, 415 S. Buesching Road, Lake Zurich, from 10:00 am until the time of the Remembrance Service at 12:00 pm. A Luncheon will follow.
Walter died peacefully on March 8, 2016. He was born January 31, 1932 in Queens, NY.
He is the loving father to Shari (Ivan) Hartwell-Cook and Jim (Karen) Hartwell; cherished grandpa to Amanda Cook, Matthew Cook, Caroline Hartwell and Colin Hartwell. He is survived by wife Arlene; step father to Ray (Cheryl), Ted (Jean) and Ron (Janice) Koplin and also survived by his beloved sisters, Virginia Gregory, Janet (Dave) Roche and Carol (Ruegg) Quibell; fond uncle to many nieces and nephews. Walter is proceeded in death by Jean Hartwell his first wife of 35 years, his father Charles Hartwell and his mother Rose Hartwell.
He was a graduate of Newark College of Engineering (MSEE) and served in the Air Force during the Korean War. He worked his entire career at Bell Laboratories, holds many patents in digital speech, speech recognition, blood flow and data storage. Proudly worked on Telstar, the first trans-Atlantic satellite communication system. A man of many talents, he also designed, engineered and built two family homes, various boats, and a pool.
