Emblem

The private Graveside Inurnment, with full military honors, for William James Hawkins, 87, of Lake Zurich, since 2023, will be held Saturday, March 1, 2025, at St. Mary Cemetery, Lake Forest, Illinois.

William was born June 28, 1937, in Oak Park, and he passed away peacefully on February 6, 2025, in Lake Zurich.

William was the beloved husband of the late, Carol Lyn Hawkins; loving father of Courtney (David); loving grandfather of Andrew and Griffin; dear son of the late, William A. and Ruth (nee Hayes); fond brother of Carol O'Grady; and loving partner, Sheila Johnston; and caring uncle to nieces and nephews of the O'Grady family.

As he was known, Bill attended Mount Carmel High School in Chicago and then graduated from the University of Notre Dame class of 1959 with a journalism degree. After graduating from college, Bill served as an officer in the U.S. Navy on the USS Hornet aircraft carrier from July 1959 to November 1962 and made over 100 flights as the plane's radar operator.

Bill took immense pride in his service in the Navy, often sharing stories about his time aboard the USS Hornet. His time at Notre Dame also held a special place in his heart, where he created lasting memories and forged lifelong friendships.

Bill was a wonderful father to Courtney and a loving husband to Lyn. They married in 1967 and lived in Lincolnshire, Illinois. Bill was a vice president of marketing and sales for many years. Bill was a supportive parent and a guiding presence in Courtney's life, nurturing her passions and encouraging her growth. Some of the fondest memories include him coaching Courtney's girls' softball team alongside a neighborhood friend, family game nights, wearing bright-colored plaid pants, and the special family trips they took each year to Santa Fe, New Mexico. After Lyn passed away in 1990, Bill stepped up even more, becoming the sole parent to Courtney and ensuring she felt loved and supported every day.

Beyond his military, academic, and career pursuits, Bill truly enjoyed life. He loved gathering with his lifelong friends for poker games, where laughter and camaraderie filled the room. Golf was another passion; he spent countless hours on the course, especially during his 25 years in Asheville. Playing bridge was another favorite pastime, where strategic moves were made alongside laughter and good company.

He met Sheila Johnston in Asheville, N.C., and they became committed partners in 2017. They enjoyed many good years together. They took trips, played bridge, and made happy memories in Asheville. Their love for exploring new places and each other brought them joy.

Bill's legacy of love, friendship, and dedication to family will forever remain in the hearts of all who knew him.
